Recommendations for travelers

The diseases that cause serious health hazards for tourists, i.e. malaria and dengue fever are less likely to occur in popular tourist destinations of Peru but you should always follow certain precautions regarding the water that you intake and the food that you eat because of risks of diarrhea and parasites. Some rural and semi-rural areas of Peru are associated with more serious illnesses.

In some rural areas of the jungle, yellow fever virus is present; those areas are located in the northern jungle, and central and southern part of Peru. They include the regions of San martin, Ucayali, Loreto, Huanuco, Junin, Pasco, and Madre de dios. The General Office of Epidemiology recommends national and international tourists that visit these areas to vaccine against yellow fever at least 10 days before entering.

Bartonellosis, an infectious bacterial disease caused by sandflies, is endemic in certain zones of Peru. People should take precautions, especially when camping. It is recommended that people use insect repellent, sleep protected with mosquito nets, and be especially careful of insects between 4 p.m. and 7 pm. Also, it is recommended to wear protective clothing.

Malaria and dengue fever, diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, are endemic to certain zones of the jungle of Peru. It is recommended for people to take prophylactic medicines prescribed by a physician before entering these areas. It is also recommended to use insect repellant, wear protective clothing, and sleep under a mosquito net.

Foods and beverages should be well-cooked (steamed or roasted) before eating. If you eat canned food, please purchase it in a reputable food market and check the date of expiration as well as the health registration number (equivalent as the FDA approval). It is recommended not to eat food from street vendors.

Water represents a great risk of transmitting digestive diseases, therefore, it is recommended to consume bottled liquids, or drink treated boiled water. Do not drink raw water.

If you return from your trip with a fever or abnormal symptoms, please visit a health center and seek medical care as soon as possible. Please avoid self-medication.
